What Causes Spider Veins?

Are you bothered by spider veins on your face or legs? These small, damaged veins can make your skin look blotchy or uneven. Spider veins have many causes, but most can be addressed with Dr. Dohner’s range of treatment options. Fortunately, spider veins are usually only a cosmetic problem, so whether they require treatment depends on how you feel about them.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, superficial veins under the skin that have become stretched and damaged. They can occur for many reasons, including:

  • Genetics
  • Standing or sitting for long periods
  • Heavy sun exposure
  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain medical conditions

Spider veins in the legs are often caused by different factors than those on the face. Facial spider veins can be due to conditions such as rosacea or many other causes. Dr. Dohner will assess your spider veins and determine what may have caused them so you can take steps to avoid them in the future.

How are Spider Veins Treated?

Your New York Skin & Vein Center team offers several spider vein treatment options. Many people benefit from a combination of treatments to achieve their desired results. Dr. Dohner will develop your treatment plan based on the size and location of your spider veins.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is often considered the “gold standard for spider vein treatment on your legs. Dr. Dohner uses a small needle to inject spider veins with an advanced sclerosing foam during this procedure. This foam causes the vein walls to collapse, rerouting blood flow to healthy veins.

KTP and Laser

This laser treats tiny spider veins on your face. The laser energy travels through your skin without harming it, targeting the pigments inside your spider veins. The pigments absorb the laser energy as heat, damaging the inside of the vein and collapsing it.

VeinGogh™

Leg spider veins too small for sclerotherapy, such as those on the ankles, are often treated with VeinGogh™. It uses a thin fiber inserted next to the problem vein. The fiber emits pulses of energy that close off the treated vein. It is also used for veins in places like the ankles.

Most people will see significant improvements within a few weeks
