How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Very few people have a single skin concern. Most of us have several issues, from acne scars and hyperpigmentation to fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels are a versatile treatment option to rejuvenate your skin. In the hands of a skilled provider, chemical peels can be customized to achieve your desired results.

What is A Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a treatment applied to the skin for a specific time to remove outer layers of skin cells. Chemical peels usually use acids to target skin to a precise depth. Your New York Skin & Vein team offers Dr. Obagi’s ZO Skin Health chemical peels. With several options to choose from, your chemical peel expert can choose the best one for your needs.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Chemical peels usually use several types of acids. These can include glycolic, salicylic, trichloroacetic acids and phenol (carbolic acid). These acids break the bonds between dead skin cells, peeling them away and revealing healthy new skin cells. The stronger the chemical peel, the deeper it works in the skin.

Mild chemical peels are often used to brighten and rejuvenate the skin. Over a series of treatments, you can see improvements in skin texture, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines. A medium peel is more intensive and can address deeper skin concerns with fewer treatments. Deep peels require up to a few weeks of downtime but can treat deep issues, including some superficial skin cancers.

Is There Any Downtime After Chemical Peels?

The downtime after a chemical peel varies depending on the peel’s ingredients and how long it stays on your skin. Some peels have no downtime, although your skin may look flushed for a few hours. Others may result in a few days of redness and sensitivity. ZO Skin Health peels combine minimum downtime with maximum results for your best results.

How Often Should I Have a Chemical Peel?

Your chemical peel provider will help you determine a chemical peel schedule that works for you. Some chemical peels require several sessions to work. You can have a light peel as often as every few weeks. Stronger peels may be used every few months. You can only have a deeper peel once. After you finish your initial series of peels, you may choose to have an occasional maintenance treatment to keep your skin smooth and glowing.

Am I a Good Candidate for Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are so versatile that they work for almost anyone. Good candidates for chemical peels want to address a variety of skin concerns. Chemical peels are very safe in the hands of an experienced provider. However, they should not be used if you have an active skin condition or infection. Only a consultation can determine which chemical peel is best for your goals.
