Facial veins, especially ones around the eyes, nose and cheeks, make you feel shy and want to hide your face. There are many causes for facial veins which most people are not aware of. If you’re suffering from small or large facial veins, either blue or red in color, there are treatment options available to help you restore your confidence in your face.
Face veins usually appear as small spider veins around your nose, mouth, chin, or eyes. Veins closer to your eyes may also be large and blue or green in color. Sun exposure, genetics, pregnancy, trauma, sun exposure, inherited disorders, rosacea, and certain medications all contribute to the cause, as well as liver disease and alcohol consumption. Larger varicose veins on the face and neck can be inherited as well, appearing at birth or in early childhood.
The first step is to schedule an in-person consultation with one of our highly trained providers at New York Skin & Vein Center located in Oneonta, NY, serving the surrounding New York areas with additional offices in Norwich, Binghamton, Cobleskill and Oneonta.

Similarly to other spider veins, Dr. Dohner and his team of experts use either laser vein therapy or sclerotherapy to treat these veins:
While most leg spider veins are treated with sclerotherapy, laser treatment is most commonly used for facial veins since they are so tiny. The 532 KTP/1064 Nd:Yag Excel V Laser is used for treating the tiniest spider veins or spider veins that don’t respond well to sclerotherapy on the legs. Focused laser light energy penetrates the surface of the skin targeting the problematic veins and sealing them shut. The vein is no longer able to carry blood and therefore you can’t see them.
For larger blue veins on the face, sclerotherapy is a great treatment option. The procedure is quick, convenient, and economical. Sclerotherapy involves a number of micro-injections directly into the questionable vein. Dr. Dohner uses an advanced foam sclerotherapy technique to ensure the best possible outcome with only 1 or 2 sessions.
Results will start to appear immediately following treatment, with continued improvement for the weeks following. Although laser procedures and sclerotherapy will reduce the appearance of the veins, it is possible for new veins to form in time after the treatment. Many patients require multiple treatments for their facial veins. Dr. Dohner will assess your needs and review your treatment plan during your initial consultation.Â
You can expect little to no downtime after your facial vein treatment, and plan to resume your normal activities immediately after treatment. Some patients with sensitive skin may notice temporary redness for 1-2 weeks post-procedure.Â
