How Long Does It Take to Remove a Tattoo?

Your personality and life experiences change over time, but your old tattoo will not. If you have outgrown your tattoo and feel ready to move on, you would probably like to remove it immediately. However, laser tattoo removal will require a series of treatments to remove most tattoos. While getting a tattoo takes a few hours, removing it may take months.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Your tattoo ink stays in your skin because the pigment particles are too big for your body to remove. Laser tattoo removal with the Enlighten™ laser targets these pigments, which absorb the laser energy and shatter into smaller pieces. Your body’s white blood cells collect and remove these small pieces, fading the tattoo over time.

How Long Does Removing a Tattoo Take?

Each tattoo presents a different challenge. How long your tattoo takes to remove depends on several factors. For example, black and blue pigments are easier to break up than brightly colored ones. Older or amateur tattoos are closer to the surface and easier to remove. Professional tattoo tools place the ink deeper into the skin, where removing it is more difficult.

While everyone’s tattoo responds differently, most people will need between two and eight sessions to achieve their goals. We offer our laser tattoo removal guarantee: if you need more than eight treatments to eliminate your tattoo, you will not pay for future ones. Your skin needs four to six weeks between treatments, so your laser tattoo removal journey can take several months.

Does Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?

The Enlighten™ laser is a much more comfortable experience than older, less effective lasers. We use a cooling system and numbing cream to maintain your comfort during treatment, but those who still find the treatment uncomfortable can have local anesthesia injections. Most people report that the laser pulses can sting or feel hot but remain very tolerable. The area of skin being treated also affects your treatment experience, with some areas more sensitive than others.

Is There Any Downtime after Laser Tattoo Removal?

While the Enlighten™ laser does not damage the skin cells, they are exposed to heat from the treated pigment particles. As a result, you may experience redness, swelling, and blistering or crusting. These should be resolved within a few days. Your laser tattoo expert will discuss products you can use on your skin after treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal?

Almost anyone with an unwanted tattoo is a good candidate for this procedure. However, only a consultation and review of your medical history can determine for sure. Good candidates should have reasonable expectations and understand the time involved in this process. You should not have laser treatment on broken, irritated, or damaged skin.
