How to Remove Facial Veins?

Spiderwebs of red or discolored veins on your face can affect your confidence and are often hard to cover up. When you are ready to erase them and achieve clear, even skin, your team at New York Skin & Vein Centers offers several options to treat your facial veins in a way that suits your needs and lifestyle.

What Causes Facial Veins?

Facial veins or spider veins develop for a combination of reasons. One of the most common factors is genetics, and if you have spider veins on your face, you most likely have relatives who also do. Facial veins become visible when the tiny veins in your face become stretched, allowing their color to show through the skin. Other factors include:

  • Age-related changes
  • Medical conditions like Rosacea
  • Steroids or other medications
  • Pregnancy
  • Sun exposure
  • Alcohol use

How to Remove Facial Veins

While frustrating, visible facial veins are a very treatable concern. Dr. Dohner and his team will assess your needs and determine the best method of treatment. Some people may benefit from a combination of methods, especially if they have a variety of larger and smaller spider veins.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is most often used for spider veins in the legs, but it also works for blue facial veins especially the larger blue ones around your eyes. It works by injecting a foam compound into the problem vein, causing it to collapse. Blood flow will reroute to other veins, and the treated one will fade away.

532 KTP and 1064 Nd:Yag Lasers

These laser treatments work by targeting the blood that makes your spider veins visible. These pigments absorb the laser energy, while your skin does not. The pigments heat up and damage the vein, causing it to close off. These treatments are effective for a wide range of facial spider veins.

VeinGogh™

This treatment, used to address very small veins, is often used on the nose to treat facial veins in this common area. It uses a thin fiber placed alongside the problem vein that emits a pulse of energy that damages the vein. This method is also used to treat spider veins around the ankles.

Is There Any Downtime After Facial Vein Removal?

There is generally no downtime required after facial vein removal. However, avoiding sun exposure and using sunscreen is important to avoid side effects such as hyperpigmentation. You may have some redness or bruising in the treatment area lasting a few days. Your treatment team will provide you with instructions specific to your treatment.

What Results Will I See With Facial Vein Removal?

How long it takes your facial veins to fade depends on many factors. The size, color, and depth of the treated veins play a role, as does your body’s metabolism. Some people will require several treatments to achieve their desired results. We will work with you until you achieve the clear skin you hope to see.
