How Do Endovenous Laser Treatments Get Rid of Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are more than just an aesthetic issue. While these visible veins look ugly, they can signal a problem with your deeper circulation. Endovenous laser treatments effectively eliminate the problem under the skin which feeds the surface veins. This method addresses the underlying cause of your varicose veins.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are dysfunctional veins that stretch and weaken. They occur when the one-way valves in your leg veins fail, allowing blood to pool inside. This often occurs in the leg veins, which then cause backflow into numerous feeder veins that may become visible under the skin.

Dr. Dohner at New York Skin & Vein Center treats varicose veins using several techniques. To address the underlying problem and prevent these varicose veins from recurring, he will treat the dysfunctional vein that allows the backup of blood flow. Your body removes treated veins over time.

How Do Endovenous Laser Treatments Get Rid of Varicose Veins?

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) uses laser energy to close varicose veins. It is also known as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA). Dr. Dohner performs this treatment by making a tiny puncture in the skin and inserting a fiber that emits laser energy. Once the fiber has been inserted into the vein, it emits pulses of energy into the vein walls. The vein is thereby sealed shut, redirecting your blood to healthy veins.

This treatment eliminates the dysfunctional vein. However, the varicose veins visible on your legs might not go away without treatment. The veins have become stretched and frequently cannot go back to normal. Dr. Dohner offers several treatment methods for bothersome veins, including ambulatory phlebectomy and sclerotherapy.

How Many Endovenous Laser Treatments Will I Need?

EVLT will usually treat the targeted vein with one treatment. However, you may need other appointments and treatment methods to eliminate the veins that bother you. While varicose veins cannot grow back after treatment, your body can form new ones if blood continues to pool in the leg veins.

Am I a Good Candidate for Endovenous Laser Treatments?

Good candidates for EVLT have varicose veins resulting from blood backing up in larger veins. Ideal candidates for this treatment have reasonable expectations and are prepared to follow their aftercare instructions. Only a consultation can determine the best method for treating your varicose veins.
