Why Do My Varicose Veins Ache?

If you have varicose veins in your legs, you are right to be concerned about them. While a few people have no significant problems with their varicose veins, the vast majority of sufferers do!  Varicose veins requires assessment by a vein specialist like Dr. Dohner. You’re leg discomfort may signal problems with the circulation in your legs. Fortunately, New York Skin & Vein Centers offers effective treatments that will put an end to your varicose vein discomfort.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are visible veins, typically on the legs. They often look raised, bulging, and twisted and may look blue, red, or purple. Your leg veins use one-way valves to help them move blood against the force of gravity. If these valves weaken, blood can back up in the peripheral veins, causing them to bulge and stretch. When this backflow occurs in important deep veins of the legs, you may experience aching, burning, or a range of other symptoms.

Why Do My Varicose Veins Hurt?

If your varicose veins are bothersome, it may be a sign of problems with blood flow in your legs. Symptoms that can result from this compromised blood flow include:

  • Throbbing
  • Aching
  • Tiredness
  • Heaviness
  • Cramps
  • Swelling
  • Neuropathy
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Rashes and ulcers on the lower legs

If you have varicose vein pain, schedule an appointment with Dr. Dohner for a full assessment. Treatment can restore proper circulation and relieve your discomfort.

How are Varicose Veins Treated?

Dr. Dohner will determine the best treatment for you based on your assessment. He often uses one treatment for deep vein concerns and another to improve the appearance of superficial ones.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

EVLT is the definitive treatment for deep vein circulation problems. Dr. Dohner inserts a thin laser fiber into the dysfunctional vein during this treatment. The fiber emits pulses of laser energy that damage the vein’s walls, causing it to collapse. This causes blood to stop flowing through the damaged vein and redirect through healthier routes.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is a fast, effective way to eliminate visible varicose veins. Using an incision the size of a freckle, Dr. Dohner uses tiny tools to “hook” the end of the vein and remove it. As a result, the appearance of the treated vein disappears rapidly.

Varithena® and Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins that are not visible on the surface can be treated with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. This treatment works by injecting a sclerosing foam called Varithena® into the problem vein. This foam irritates the walls of the vein, causing it to collapse and send blood to healthier veins.
