When Will I See Results from Sclerotherapy?

Do you have small blue or red leg veins? These so-called spider veins affect your confidence and are difficult to hide. Most women avoid wearing skirts, shorts and bathing suits because of them.  Fortunately, sclerotherapy can erase spider veins and give you clear skin. Sclerotherapy treats spider veins on your legs, around your eyes, or breasts, providing lasting results.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Spider veins are a common problem, making you self-conscious. Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment that seals shut these problem veins (which are non essential to your vascular system). The veins will then fade away over time. This minimally invasive injectable treatment is considered the “gold standard” for treating spider veins. Sclerotherapy can treat all but the smallest spider veins, which are typically treated with a laser or VeinGogh™ technology.

How Does Sclerotherapy Treat Spider Veins?

Dr. Dohner at New York Skin & Vein Center will assess your spider veins and determine the best treatment or combination of treatments. He performs sclerotherapy by injecting a foam solution into the larger feeder veins. This foam irritates and damages the vein walls, causing them to collapse. Blood stops flowing through the treated vein, and the body will absorb the pigments. The smaller veins are injected with a liquid solution that is FDA approved. The outdated saline solutions are no longer used due to the pain and scarring that was associated with them

When Will I See Results from Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy results take time to become visible. As the body begins to absorb the pigments from the treated vein, its appearance gradually fades. You will usually start to see results within three to five days. Some veins may take longer than others to disappear.

Many spider veins require more than one treatment to address them fully. Treatments are spaced six to eight weeks apart. Larger spider veins may take more treatments to remove than smaller ones. Each person responds differently to sclerotherapy, and Dr. Dohner will explain what you can expect based on your concerns.

Is There Any Downtime After Sclerotherapy?

You can return to your usual activities after sclerotherapy with no downtime. Depending on the location of your spider veins, you may have a compression garment to wear for one to fourtenn days. You may experience minor bruising, swelling, or sensitivity in the treated area that disappears within a week. Dr. Dohner will provide you with detailed instructions to guide you.
