What Not to Do After Laser Tattoo Removal

We all have reasons for getting a tattoo, and each person has their reasons for wanting to get rid of one. Whatever your reasons, laser tattoo removal can fade your tattoo and end your frustration. This treatment works over a series of sessions to break up tattoo ink with lasting results.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Laser tattoo removal is a process that breaks apart particles of tattoo ink. Your body removes these broken fragments of pigment. At New York Skin & Vein Centers, we use the Enlighten™ laser, a powerful system that effectively targets all shades of ink, even those that pose a problem for other lasers. This laser works more gently and requires fewer treatments than similar systems for the best tattoo removal experience.

What to Expect During Laser Tattoo Removal

A laser tattoo removal session takes 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of your tattoo. We use numbing cream and a skin cooling system to maintain your comfort, with lidocaine or other methods available if you feel uncomfortable. The most common sensations are a feeling of heat or a rubber band snapping on the skin.

What Not to Do After Laser Tattoo Removal

After laser tattoo removal, you can resume your daily activities, but your skin may look red and feel sensitive for several days. You may also experience some swelling and spots of crusting, peeling, or small blisters. Follow these post-treatment tips to ensure fast healing:

  • Do not apply any harsh or irritating products to the skin
  • Do not allow the skin to become dry and crusty
  • Apply Aquaphor or antibiotic cream regularly
  • Do not expose the treated area to the sun
  • Do not pick at or touch blisters or peeling spots

Apply only the products your tattoo removal specialist recommends and protect the treated area from dirt and germs. Your skin can take several weeks to heal entirely, so sun protection between sessions is essential.

How Many Laser Tattoo Removal Treatments Will I Need?

The number of tattoo removal treatments needed varies widely. Several factors affect how long a tattoo takes to remove, including:

  • The colors in the tattoo
  • The age of the tattoo
  • The density of the tattoo ink
  • The depth of your tattoo

A small tattoo with easy-to-remove colors like black and blue may only take two sessions. Most people need between two and eight treatments to achieve their desired results.

We offer our tattoo removal guarantee: we will not charge you for more treatment if your tattoo is not gone after eight sessions!

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal?

Most people are good candidates for laser tattoo removal. The Enlighten™ laser is safe and effective on all tattoos. Laser tattoo removal is not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should not have treatment if you have an active skin condition or infection in your tattoo area.
