What Causes Rosacea and How to Treat it

If you struggle with redness, bumps, and “broken” blood vessels, you may have rosacea. This condition can cause significant stress and frustration. Fortunately, Dr. Dohner and his team can develop a treatment plan to manage your rosacea symptoms. Rosacea treatment often requires a comprehensive plan in order to provide long-lasting relief.

What Causes Rosacea?

Scientists think that rosacea results from a combination of factors. Heredity plays a role, so that if you have it, you may have family members that also suffer from it. Autoimmune and environmental factors also seem to contribute. Rosacea often flares and fades, especially when exposed to certain triggers such as exercise, weather changes, stress, and irritating products.

How to Treat Rosacea

At New York Skin & Vein Centers, we treat rosacea with a comprehensive plan that provides results. Rosacea ranges widely in severity, so each person’s treatment plan will differ. Your methods of rosacea management include:

  • Trigger avoidance
  • ZO Skin Health products
  • Topical prescription treatments
  • Laser therapy

Laser treatments seal shut the blood vessels that cause the redness and individual broken capillaries that make you look flushed and blushed. We perform Laser treatments with the Excel® V laser. This laser uses two wavelengths, allowing it to target red, blue, purple, and brown pigments. The laser energy heats these pigments, closing the redness-causing blood vessels. This provides long-lasting relief from symptoms such as flushing, redness, and uneven skin tone.

Is There Any Downtime After Rosacea Treatment?

Medical-grade ZO Skin Health products provide a non-irritating way to improve skin oiliness, roughness, and bumps. Prescription treatments are stronger and can have side effects for some people, although these are usually mild. The Excel® V laser usually causes a day or two of sunburn-like redness and sensitivity. You can resume all your usual activities within that time. However, make sure to avoid sun exposure.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rosacea Treatment?

Anyone with rosacea makes a good candidate for a customized rosacea management plan. The treatments included in this plan will vary based on your needs. While not everyone makes a good candidate for the Excel® V laser, it can provide long-lasting results for most people. With the experienced New York Skin & Vein Centers team on your side, you will find a routine that lets you feel free and confident in your skin.

What Results Will I See With Rosacea Treatment?

You will see results after just one treatment with the Excel® V laser. Your skin will look smoother, softer, and even-toned. Most people see at least a 50% improvement in redness and noticeable fading of pigmented spots. While each person’s results will vary, you can expect one to two treatments yearly to control the redness and keep your skin clear.
