How Can I Treat Facial Volume Loss?

Have you noticed your cheeks looking more hollow or your lips looking thinner? Facial volume loss happens naturally as we age, but dermal fillers can restore youthful fullness. Dermal fillers add volume to the skin but can also improve its condition from within for long-lasting results.

What Causes Facial Volume Loss?

Facial volume loss causes many of the changes we associate with aging. The skin loses collagen over time, leaving it with less support and volume. Factors that contribute to loss of facial volume include:

  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Sun exposure
  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Poor diet
  • Weight loss

Even a healthy lifestyle and diligent skincare will not completely prevent volume loss. Over time, the decrease in collagen production occurs as a natural part of aging.

How Can I Treat Facial Volume Loss?

Dr. Dohner and his team treat facial volume loss with dermal fillers. They can choose from a variety of fillers to customize your results. Some fillers have effects almost immediately, but others develop slowly as your skin produces new collagen.

Restylane®

The Restylane® family of dermal fillers uses hyaluronic acid (HA). HA works by attracting and binding moisture in the skin, adding volume and hydration. Restylane® fillers usually last between six and twelve months. BELOTERO BALANCE® and Revanesse® Versa™ are also HA dermal fillers.

RADIESSE®

Calcium hydroxylapatite (RADIESSE®) occurs naturally in your bones and teeth. It forms a dense, resilient dermal filler that works well for hollowness and wrinkles in the mid-face area (cheeks), jawline and temples. Results can last up to eighteen months

Sculptra®

Sculptra® uses poly-L-lactic acid to trigger collagen production. Sculptra® results take several weeks or months to appear as new collagen develops. This filler can provide a significant facial volume improvement with results lasting three years or more. It is best for the person with a thin face who needs a lot of volume replacement.

Bellafill®

One of our favorite dermal fillers uses polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) to stimulate collagen for long-lasting results. Bellafill® provides results similar to other dermal fillers, but the effects last much longer. Most people are still happy with their Bellafill® results after five years or more

Is There Any Downtime With Dermal Fillers?

You can return to most of your usual activities after getting dermal fillers for facial volume loss. We may recommend avoiding performing strenuous activities for a day afterwards. You will probably be a little bit swollen for a few days and bruising can always happen after a filler injection.

Am I a Good Candidate for Facial Volume Loss Treatment?

All our dermal fillers are FDA-approved and safe for most people. Some fillers may not be suitable for you if you have specific allergies, such as bovine collagen or lidocaine. If you have a history of hypersensitivity, discuss it during your consultation so we can choose an appropriate solution.
