If you have deep, depressed acne scars, a subcision treatment can help smooth these particularly stubborn scars. Subcision is a technique of breaking up the scar tissue that is pulling the scar down to allow it to flatten and smooth out. This is a simple procedure using local anesthesia and a special tool that only takes about 15 minutes.
Some scars – especially those that are older, thicker, and raised from the skin’s surface – can be smoothed out using injectable treatments. At New York Skin & Vein Centers, we use injections of medications like steroids and 5FU can soften and smooth out scars.
The injections are well tolerated and usually show results after the first treatment session (though it can take more than one session to see ideal results).
This laser treats scars by decreasing redness, decreasing scar volume, and improving skin texture. Vascular lasers work best when used early in the treatment of scars. Scars that are red or purple will respond to excel® V or Laser Genesis. The treatment is fast and painless and usually needs to be repeated 2 to 4 times to see the best results.

This laser treats scars by breaking up your scar and stimulating new skin growth. The CO2 laser works on fresh or old scars and can improve the color, texture, and thickness of scars. The treatment uses topical numbing creams to make it painless and usually needs to be repeated 1to 4 times to see the best results. While it can give the best results, there is more downtime for the healing process associated with the CO2 laser.
You’ve probably heard of microneedling which is used for wrinkles. Microneedling uses tiny sterile stainless steel needles to puncture the skin to stimulate the healing process. The combination of radiofrequency energy with microneedling gives a powerful tool for improving your scar as well as smoothing wrinkles, tightening pores and evening out skin discoloration. The treatment uses topical numbing creams to make it painless and needs to be repeated 3 to 6 times to see the best results.
Chemical peels – can help fade the appearance of facial scarring, especially rough or bumpy acne scarring. Plus, these facial peels have the additional benefit of treating signs of aging, like wrinkles and uneven skin texture! There are 3 different types of peels based on their depth of skin penetration which determines how much benefit you’ll get which also dictates how much healing time you’ll require from zero to 7 days.
