What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness of your face as well as acne-like bumps and ‘broken’ blood vessels. Causes of rosacea include heredity, autoimmune conditions, and environmental factors. While rosacea has no cure, you can manage it in several ways. First, try to avoid situations likely to provoke a flare, but this may be impossible. You also have the option to seek a treatment that will dramatically improve your symptoms.

How to Treat Rosacea

At New York Skin & Vein Center, we treat rosacea with the Excel® V laser. This dual-wavelength laser targets red, brown, blue, and purple vascular and pigmentation problems in your skin. The dual wavelengths can focus on individual spots while also treating the redness and uneven skin tones over your whole face.

The Excel® V laser works against your rosacea by sealing shut the vessels that cause the redness and flushing. It also targets the larger red blood vessels and breaks them down for removal by the body. By treating the vascular causes of flushing and redness, the Excel® V laser significantly improves rosacea and the bumps and textural changes that can occur.

What Results Will I See From Rosacea Treatment?

You will see improvement in skin tone and firmness immediately after treatment. Other improvements will begin to appear after a few days and continue to develop for up to three months. Each person’s results may last a different length of time, but maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months will keep rosacea symptoms at bay.

You will usually see a 50% decrease in redness and flushing, as well as the fading or disappearance of pigmented vascular spots with your first treatment. Skin will look smoother, more even, and clearer, letting people spend less time trying to hide their rosacea and more time engaging with the world without feeling self-conscious. Subsequent treatments will improve it even more.

Is There Any Downtime With Rosacea Treatment?

After treatment for rosacea with the excel® V, you will experience some sunburn like redness and swelling lasting one or two days. Most people can go back to work after a day or two, and at this point, you can resume regular activities, including makeup and exercising. Your healing skin will be sun-sensitive, so make sure to avoid sun exposure.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rosacea Treatment?

If you have rosacea that causes redness and visible blood vessels, you make a good candidate for treatment with the Excel® V laser. People should have reasonable expectations about their results and understand that treatment can control but not cure rosacea.
