Women and men can achieve relief from varicose veins and spider veins with a variety of non-surgical options. Advancements over the last decade have resulted in pain-free procedures that offer improvements in the health and appearance of your legs. But before we can determine the best route to take for treatment, we’ll need to decide what needs to be done first.
How Do I Know What Type of Veins I Have?
Our legs contain a network of veins on the surface, as well as under the skin. Varicose veins are larger swollen blood vessels in the surface network that twist and appear as bluish cords. They are sometimes tender and always flatten out when you lie down. They can be associated with leg rashes, swelling, aching, throbbing, cramps and restless legs. Spider veins are smaller thread like veins that do not improve or flatten out when you lie down. They only occasionally cause burning or stinging.
What Causes Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are caused when their valves do not work properly so that blood is not pumped back to the heart to recirculate. When this happens, blood pools in the vein, increasing pressure in the tissues of the legs. This pressure presents as throbbing, cramping, aching, swelling, itching, or an overall heaviness in the leg. In some cases, you may experience rashes, ulcers or clots.
What About Spider Veins?
Spider veins are smaller patches of flooded capillaries that twist and turn beneath the surface of the skin. Most often seen in the legs, chest or face, spider veins are red, purple, and blue. Though unattractive, spider veins are not dangerous but can be associated with underlying vein disease that needs to be fixed for medical reasons.
What Are My Treatment Options?
Dr. Dohner offers several solutions for both varicose and spider veins. You may be a candidate for varicose vein removal if you suffer from any of the pain symptoms discussed above. Even if you’re simply unhappy with the appearance of spider veins, you will find relief with our treatments.
What Results Can I Expect From Each Treatment?
Within days of treatment, you’ll notice an improvement in the tired, heavy feeling in your leg as the varicose veins start to shrink. You will notice improvement within 3-5 days of your initial spider vein treatment. Larger veins take longer to resolve than smaller ones, but with continued treatments, your veins will gradually fade over time.
Spider Veins & Varicose Veins Consultations Available
Is There Any Downtime?
Depending on which removal method is chosen, and the severity of your condition, downtime following varicose vein treatment will range from no downtime, (allowing you to immediately return to your normal daily activities) or up to two days as needed.
Spider vein treatment comes with no downtime. Common side effects include redness, swelling, tenderness, and/or slight bruising, but typically these do not last more than 3-7 days. Dr. Dohner may recommend wearing compression socks or stockings for up to two days following your procedure.
