How Long Does it Take for Varithena® to Work?

If you have uncomfortable, unsightly varicose veins that you want to get rid of, New York Skin and Vein: now part of Schweiger Dermatology Groups offers several treatment methods to help. The newest of these, Varithena®, can treat problem veins with only one treatment and no downtime.

Varithena Oneonta

What is Varithena®?

Varithena® has been approved by the FDA to treat problems with the greater saphenous vein system in the legs. It comes in the form of an injectable foam. Because the foam effectively fills up the space inside the vein, most people only need one or two injections. Varithena® usually resolves vein problems with only one treatment. The foam causes damage and scarring to the walls of the diseased vein, causing it to collapse. While blood redirects through healthy veins, the body absorbs the collapsed veins, leaving the treated area looking smoother while it reduces or eliminates venous symptoms.

After your treatment with Varithena®, you can expect to start seeing results within a week or two. The treated veins will become flatter and less visible, and you will feel less discomfort. Results will improve for at least two to three months.

Am I a Good Candidate for Varithena®?

Most people with varicose veins make good candidates for Varithena®. A thorough history and examination will help your doctor determine whether Varithena® will make a good treatment option for you. If you have uncomfortable, bothersome varicose veins, Varithena® can get rid of them quickly and painlessly.

Is There Any Downtime with Varithena®?

You can go back to your usual activities the same day you have treatment, and your doctor will instruct that you walk at least ten minutes each day for a month or more. After the treatment, you will have a compression garment to wear for two weeks. You can resume more rigorous activities within a week or two. Consistent physical activity will improve your cardiovascular health.
