How Does Varicose Vein Treatment Work?

Most women hate their varicose veins and don’t wear shorts or skirts because of them. Varicose veins don’t go away on their own and will get worse over time. There are many medical reasons varicose veins need to be removed. If your varicose veins are causing aching, throbbing, tiredness heaviness, swelling, cramps, restlessness, pain, rashes, ulcers, or clots, then it is time to see Dr. Dohner about your legs.

What Are My Options?

Here at New York Skin & Vein Center, we offer several treatments for varicose veins. Treatments are done in-office under local anesthesia and typically take less than an hour to complete. The following treatments may be used depending on the size and location of your unwanted veins.

Endovenous Laser Treatments (EVLT)

Endovenous laser treatments is an non-invasive procedure similar to starting an IV. A small catheter with a laser fiber is placed into the abnormal vein under the surface of the skin. After numbing the tissue with local anesthesia, the laser is then fired to cauterize and seal shut the vein. This automatically sends blood to normal veins. The process causes the veins to be naturally-reabsorbed over time. You are up and walking right after the procedure.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is a minimally-invasive procedure that removes the bulging veins. Dr. Dohner uses local anesthesia to numb the areas around the veins, then make tiny punctures in the skin to pull out unwanted veins for instant results. Ambulatory phlebectomy is often done at the same time as EVLT treatments to minimize your downtime. 

The procedure is best for veins that are just below the surface of the skin. Patients can achieve long-lasting results from just one ambulatory phlebectomy treatment. However, sclerotherapy may need to be done if new veins appear over time.

Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses a specialized injection process to seal shut smaller unwanted veins. Dr. Dohner places an FDA-approved solution directly into the vein effectively causing it to close off. Over time, blood is rerouted through healthier veins, and damaged veins are reabsorbed into the body leaving your skin clearer.

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is especially good for hard to identify veins. Veins that cannot be treated with other methods can typically be addressed with this procedure. Some patients are able to achieve their desired results with just one treatment, while others may need a series for veins to respond the way they want.
