Spider veins on the nose and face are clusters of tiny blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin. Though usually quite harmless, many women and men are bothered by their appearance. Spider veins may be the result of heredity, pregnancy, sun damage, or the natural aging process.

Luckily, there are a variety of treatments to remove them. Which is right for you? Dr. Dohner and the specialists at New York Skin & Vein Center will help you decide based on the size and location of your spider veins.

Excel V Laser Therapy Oneonta

Excel V Laser Therapy

The Excel V Laser technology is especially good for treating spider veins on the face. The laser beam can easily be aimed at small veins on and around the nose, which heats up the vessel and seals it shut. Laser therapy is a minimally-invasive, outpatient procedure that can typically be completed in less than 30-minutes.

RadioFrequency Surgitron Cautery

Some nose veins are resistant to laser or light-based treatments and this is where an “oldie but goodie” treatment can work.  Surgitron cautery involves touching the veins with a special cautery needle tip that shrinks the vessels so they can’t carry blood and disappear. This minimally invasive, relatively pain-free treatment usually takes less than 30 minutes. It is better for larger vessels that have not responded to the Excel V laser.

Prevention Methods

You may be able to prevent new spider veins from forming once you’ve completed treatment. Avoid trauma to the nose such as vigorous blowing or injury to the nose. Also, protecting your nose and skin from the sun will keep your skin from being susceptible to spider veins. Applying a high-SPF sunscreen daily and wearing a hat when you’ll be outside for extended periods will provide additional protection.
