Is Laser Tattoo Removal Safe?

Are you concerned about laser tattoo removal damaging your skin? At New York Skin & Vein Center, you’ll receive proper care throughout the entire process to ensure your skin’s health and safety. In the hands of Dr. Dohner, the Enlighten™ Laser has the best track record for unharmed and undamaged skin.

Does Tattoo Removal Hurt?

A common misconception is that getting a tattoo removed is an unbearable experience. The truth is that when you come to a medical office like NYSVC, you have available the full array of numbing options. These include topical anesthetic creams, cold air machines to chill the area, as well as numbing injections like your dentist uses.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

New York Skin & Vein Center uses the most advanced technology to quickly and effectively address your unwanted tattoo. The Enlighten™ Laser completely erases or fades your tattoo in as little as two treatments.

This process combines the picosecond and nanosecond bursts of light into one laser. This results in half or less of the sessions needed with other outdated machines. Some older lasers require 20 sessions to get the results that we get in two. Enlighten™ is safer and better than any other laser available, allowing you to feel comfortable in your own skin with no pain or downtime.

What Side Effects Can I Expect?

The average patient is more concerned with long-lasting side effects than temporary ones. All long-lasting side effects are avoidable if the proper aftercare is implemented. Temporary side effects are minimized at New York Skin & Vein in the hands of Dr. Dohner.

The most common side effects are redness, tenderness, and swelling. These typically go away within 24-48 hours after treatment. Blisters may appear in the first 24 hours, which, while alarming, are completely normal and usually subside in 7-10 days.

Optimizing Laser Tattoo Removal Results

Follow these general aftercare guidelines to achieve the best possible results from your treatments:

  • Apply cool compresses to reduce discomfort and inflammation in the first 24-hours.
  • Avoid makeup or creams near the treated area for 2-days.
  • Keep the treated area clean, covered with antibiotic ointment, and bandaged for the first few days till it is healed.
  • Avoid baths, hot tubs, and swimming to reduce the chances of infection till healed.
  • Use sunblock of SPF 25 or greater for 3-months.
  • After the area is healed, keep it moisturized with Vitamin E ointment or similar.

For patients with greater risk of pigmentation changes, it is recommended to avoid sun exposure for a month following each treatment. You will need to wait until the area has returned to its normal skin tone before returning for follow up treatments. Pigmentation changes in the skin can occur when an affected area is treated too aggressively.
